Just in case you all weren’t aware already, Jeremy Soule, the composer of game soundtracks such as World of Warcraft and the Skyrim scores (among other things) has started his own Kickstarter to fund his first Symphony.

If you liked his work on the Elder Scrolls, I highly recommend you follow his progress or even pledge some money. There is a lot of great stuff you can get from it and I can guarantee it’s going to be something worth listening to.

Tsimtsum - Mychael Danna - Life of Pi

And so the winner of the 2013 Oscar goes to Mychael Danna for his score to Life of Pi. Personally I’m so happy with the choice, I absolutely loved it, especially this piece.

It has a solem, peaceful, almost religious feel to accompany Pi floating in the water as he watches the most tragic part of his life. The flute really takes the lead in this cue after the strings and choir establish the piece. The chords swell beautifully and almost effortlessly as the water in the scene while the flute plays its melancholy melody. It then slows to a more quiet and sparse string collection before crescendoing into a beautiful climactic choral finish complete with that heart wrenching chord change.

The score had the tough job of accompanying its amazingly gorgeous visual counterpart and succeeded. It is most certainly worth a listen if you havent already.

Snow White - James Newton-Howard - Snow White and the Huntsman OST

JNH really did a wonderderful job with this soundtrack, capturing the beauty, magic and at the same time, dark feel of the film.

This cue begins with a single horn intro, giving a royal and heroic feel. This emphasises Snow White’s bravery in the film as opposed to the delicate cartoon we are probably all used to. The strings then enter, introducing the stunning piano theme. This light, delicate tune represents the magic we see throughout while the dark undertone gives us a perfect sense of mystery surrounding that magic. When the full orchestra begins, it really shows off the beauty of the film’s scenes and surroundings. A perfect beginning to such a visually gorgeous film.

Okay guys, so all my stupid, non punctuated text posts aside, this one is gonna be super cereal (well, as serious as I can possibly get on this site) because its for my dissertation and I WANT/NEED ANSWERS GODDAMN.

SO, in case you people didn’t know (which you probably don’t, I have no idea how you would know or care for that matter), I am writing my final research essay on film music and emotion and such blah blah blah blah. All very interesting but I really want to conduct my own mini little investigation and who better to turn to than the BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE OF TUMBLR (Yes, I am looking at you. You gorgeous person you.)

I would like you to answer a few little and simple(ish) questions. BUT, before you answer them, I would like to stress a few things. The piece of music you choose doesn’t have to be a film soundtrack but should preferably be without lyrics. If they are with lyrics the reason for emotion shouldn’t be because the lyrics relate to happenings in your own life, thats a completely different type and legit emotion and I’m not looking for that.

So here goes;

Have you ever felt absolutely ‘moved’ by a piece? (chills, heart racing, tears, that weird feeling in your chest etc.)

How did you feel? (Don’t worry if it’s hard to describe, just say so)

What piece was that?

If you can pinpoint the moment, where in the piece did you feel it? (The time the moment occurs in the piece would be the ideal way to indicate, for example ‘2.34 minutes in’)

THATS ALL. No answer is wrong and every single answer, no matter how useless you think it may be, is useful. Even if the first answer is ‘no’ and you can’t answer the others.
